Breeding strategy for egg and meat production. Conservation and improvement of poultry species, breeds and varieties. Poultry reproductive physiology and endocrinology. Ovulation and oviposition, photostimulation and reproduction. Fertility and farm economics. Spermatogenesis, semen collection, evaluation and quality control, artificial insemination. Fertilization, embryonic development and hatching management. Breeding program for subsistence poultry farming.<\/h5>\n<h5><strong>ABG 610 Quantitative Genetics in Animal Breeding (3 cr.):<\/strong> Genetic constitution and structure of population. Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, gene and genotype frequency, average heterozygosity and genetic distance, approach to equilibrium under different population structure. Values and means, variation and its component. Population genetic parameters, heritability, repeatability and genetic correlation. Average effect and breeding value. Selection and genetic gain, long term selection effects, synthetic population and heterosis. Combining ability. Scale effect, quantitative trait loci (QTL), major genes and threshold characters. Marker assisted selection.<\/h5>\n<h5><strong>ABG 632 Breeding for Fram Animals (3 cr.): <\/strong>Genetic diversity and farm animal genetic resources (FAnGRs). Conservation of genetic resources and improvement of FAnGRs and their wild relatives. Selection and genetic consequences, evaluation of selection experiments. Breeding principles, methods and parameters. Genetic consequences of mating systems, application of various mating system in animal improvement. Breeding policies and plans for improvement of animals for specific purposes, sire reference scheme, community based livestock breeding, nucleus breeding. Conservation and breeding management of endangered animal species.<\/h5>\n<h5><strong>ABG 640<\/strong> <strong>Herd Fertility and Reproductive Management (3 cr.): <\/strong>Introduction to herd fertility. Calving interval, submission and pregnancy rate and their management, calving index, targets for high performance. Fertility records and their types, designing fertility recording system. Reproductive cycles, body condition score and reproductive nutrition. Estrus behavior, methods and aids of estrus detection. Prebreeding management, service day management, timing of service, holding facilities. Pregnancy diagnosis and gestation management. Postpartum management. Fertility and its economic importance. Traditional and modern approached to improve fertility. Care and management during aging.<\/h5>\n<h5><strong>ABG 645 Breeding Animal Management and Artificial Insemination (3 cr.): <\/strong>Planning and design of breeding farm. Management of breeding herd. Care and handling of breeding animals before, during and after service. Management of teaser male. Registration and herdbook service. Design and layout of an artificial insemination (AI) center. Record keeping, management, safety and health concern at AI center. Concept of semen and sperm. Methods of semen collection. Evaluation, processing and extension of semen. Liquid and cryogenic storage of semen and sperm. Transportation and handling of liquid and frozen semen. Artificial insemination, handling and management of insemination equipment. Planning of semen distribution route according to National livestock policy. Biosecurity, disposal of waste and hazards of AI center.<\/h5>\n<h5><strong>ABG 661<\/strong> <strong>Animal Reproduction (3 cr.): <\/strong>Reproduction and its importance. Sexual differentiation and development of male and female reproductive organs. Male and female reproductive physiology. Sexual behavior of breeding male and female. Reproductive endocrinology and immunology. Cellular engagement in male and female gonads. Intracellular signaling pathways. Testicular thermoregulation, penile erection, ejaculation, semen physiology. Spermatogenesis, sperm morphology, physiology and metabolism. Pre-pubertal and pubertal management of breeding male and females. The estrous cycle, folliculogenesis, oogenesis and ovulation. Sperm capacitation and fertilization. Implantation, early embryonic development and maternal recognition of pregnancy. Gestation, prenatal development and placentation. Management of newborn and calves. Reproductive disorder in farm animals.<\/h5>\n<h5><strong>ABG 662 Breeding and Management of Laboratory Animal (3 cr.):<\/strong> Laboratory animal genetic resources (LAnGRs) and their wild relatives. Housing, casing, nutrition, care and handling of laboratory animals. Management of individual male, female and breeding colonies. Selection and mating systems for different types of LAnGRs. Development of genetically controlled laboratory animals, rules for nomenclature, inbred strains, outbred stocks, mutant stocks, recombinant inbred strains, transgenic strains, gene targeting and production of \u2018gene knock-out\u2019 and \u2018gene knock-down\u2019 animals. Genetic control and monitoring. Record keeping. Ethics in use of laboratory animals for experimentation.<\/h5>\n<h5><strong>ABG 670<\/strong> <strong>Assisted Reproductive Biotechnology (3 cr.): <\/strong>Assited reproductive biotechnology in farm animal reproduction. Artificial insemination. Estrus synchronization. Multiple ovulation and embryo transfer (MOET). Oocyte recovery and <em>in vitro<\/em> production of embryos. Embryo splitting.
