Laboratory: Collection, identification and preservation of important families including Coleoptera, Diptera, Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera, Hemiptera, Plecoptera, Trichoptera, Odonata, Ephemeroptera, Neuroptera, Orthoptera. Lecture 2 hours per week, laboratory 2 hours per week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white;margin: 0in 0in 12.0pt 0in\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';color: #555555\">ENT 546 Insecticide Toxicology (3 cr.):<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white;margin: 0in 0in 12.0pt 0in\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';color: #555555\">Lectures: Background review; bio-organic chemistry; physiology of nerve impulse transmission; concepts of insecticide toxicology; uptake and distribution of insecticides; determination of toxicity; organophosphorus, carbamate, chlorinated hydrocarbon and miscellaneous insecticides; joint action of biologically active chemicals; formulation. Laboratory: biological evaluation of insecticides; bioassay; probit analysis and residue determination. Lecture 2 hours per week and laboratory 2 hours per week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white;margin: 0in 0in 12.0pt 0in\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';color: #555555\">ENT 547 Biological Control (3 cr):<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white;margin: 0in 0in 12.0pt 0in\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';color: #555555\">Fostering pest through misuse of chemicals; pests and their natural enemies; biological control ecology; introduced biological control agents; the first foreign explorers; modern foreign exploration and success; techniques to evaluate effectiveness of natural enemies; maximizing biological control through research; manipulation of hosts and parasitoids through periodic release; use of pathogen in pest control; biological control of weeds. Laboratory: studies in digestion, food transport; tracheal system analysis; circulatory system, nervous system, chemoreception of housefly; molting and pupation hormone in housefly larvae; reproductive system. Laboratory: studies on resistance development, effects on beneficial insects, cholinesterase level of pesticides in human blood, estimation of pesticide residues in environmental samples.
