DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY AND PUBLIC HEALTH <\/strong><\/p>\n

The Department offers a graduate program leading to MS in Microbiology. Equipment’s along with other facilities are available for fundamental and applied researches in the field of microbiology, immunology and public health. Current major researches focus on isolation, identification, immunogenicity and molecular characterization of microorganisms; diagnosis of microbial diseases of animals and birds, production of vaccines and their immune response.<\/p>\n

MPH 601 Advanced Bacteriology (3 Cr.): <\/strong>Ultra-structure of bacteria; requirements for bacterial growth; biofilms, its development, its importance in bacterial survival; bacterial genetics; metabolism in bacteria; antimicrobial resistance; control of microbial growth; cell signaling system; important bacterial families\/classes of veterinary and human importance: properties, cultivation, epidemiology, virulence and pathogenicity, lab diagnosis, immunity and control; chemotherapy of bacterial infections; quantifications of bacteria.<\/p>\n

MPH 605 Advanced Virology (3 Cr.): <\/strong>Ultra-structure of viruses; modern methods of virus identification; virus replication; chemotherapy of viral infections; host-virus interaction: establishment of antiviral state, mechanism of escaping host immune response; viral genetics, genome analysis, and genetic stability; viral vectors for gene therapy; bacteriophage and phage propagation;\u00a0emerging viruses; viral families of veterinary and human importance: properties, propagation, epidemiology, pathogenicity lab diagnosis, immunity and control.<\/p>\n

MPH 615 Techniques in Microbiology (3 Cr.): <\/strong>Biosafety in microbiological laboratory; equipments for microbiological research; processing of microbiological samples; identification of microorganisms; preparations of antigen and antibodies; adjuvanting antigen and hapten; electrophoresis and electrofocussing; avian embryo inoculation techniques; cell culture techniques; molecular techniques; serological tests; western blotting; protection test; design of primers; PCRs; metagenomics, whole genome sequencing; separation of immune cells, adherence of cells to sephadex; immunohistochemical techniques; purification and concentration of horse-radish peroxidase from turnip.<\/p>\n

MPH 619 Microbial Toxin (3 Cr.): <\/strong>Microbial (bacteria, virus, fungus and other microbes) toxin and their effects on animal and human health; toxin synthesis and secretory system; isolation, purification and characterization of important microbial toxins; prophylactic use of toxin; extraction, detection and determination of endotoxin.<\/p>\n

MPH 623 Microbial Genetics (3 Cr.): <\/strong>Introduction to microbial genetics; bacterial nucleoid and DNA; RNA: processing, types and functions; modifying enzymes; antibiotics affecting nucleic acids and protein synthesis; polarity of genetic material and reverse transcription; genetic information; transformation and transfection; conjugation; plasmids; HFR formation; F-prime formation, lethal zygosis, conjugation and pheromones; transduction, lysogenic conversion, recombination and genetics of spontaneous nature of mutational events, DNA repair systems; regulation of prokaryotic gene expression; restriction and modification system of prokaryotic DNA.<\/p>\n

MPH 631 Mycology and Atypical Bacteriology (3 Cr.): <\/strong>Fungi: ultrastructure and nutritional requirements, characteristics, classification and diagnosis of pathogenic fungi; systematic study of diseases caused by phycomycetes groups; immunity against fungi, prevention and control of mycotic infections; morphology, cultural characteristics, identification, reproduction and diagnosis of mycoplasma, rickettsia and chlamydia.<\/p>\n

MPH 633 Molecular Microbiology (3 Cr.): <\/strong>Safety guidelines in laboratory, applications of molecular microbiology; preparation of RNA & DNA from bacteria and viruses and their uses; protein profiling and amino acid sequencing; physical and chemical structure of DNA, DNA replication, gene expression and DNA repair mechanisms in prokaryotes and eukaryotes; restriction enzymes; cloning; DNA library construction; gene transfer; recombinant techniques; PCR, LCR, and RFLP; chromosome walking and hopping; DNA finger printing; satellites and gene distancing; nucleic acid hybridization;\u00a0 DNA sequencing.<\/p>\n

MPH 643 Industrial Microbiology (3 Cr.): <\/strong>Microorganisms and industry; bioengineering of microorganisms for industrial use and processing of meat, milk, eggs, fruits, vegetables and their products and byproducts; preservation and monitoring of keeping quality; industrial uses of bacteria, yeasts and molds; fermentation; occupational health hazards; application of microbiological techniques in food industries; probiotics; single cell protein.<\/p>\n

MPH 653 Avian Microbes (3 Cr.): <\/strong>Factors influencing health and diseases of avian species; spread of infectious agents; hygienic and other measures for the prevention, control and eradication of infections of avian species; physico-chemical properties, cultivation, biochemical and antigenic properties, diagnosis, immunity and epidemiology of microbes infecting avian species.<\/p>\n

MPH 661 Cellular and Molecular Immunology (3 Cr.): <\/strong>Innate and adaptive immunity; ontogeny of B and T cells; CD molecules; major histocompatibility complex; antigen processing and presentation; molecular basis of B and T cell antigen recognition and activation; pattern recognition receptors and immunity; cytokines; effector cells of cell mediated immunity; complement system; mechanism of cell mediated and humoral immune response; class switching of antibodies; immunotolerance and immunoregulation; immunological disorder; transplant immunology; immunology and cancer; neonatal immunity.<\/p>\n

MPH 663 Animal Food Hygiene and Microbiology (3 Cr.):\u00a0 <\/strong>Food and microorganisms; contamination and spoilage of different foods; foods and enzymes produced by microorganism; microbial quality control, inspection and preservation of food; hazard analysis critical control point; infection and intoxication; wholesomeness, adulteration and misrepresentation of foods; determination of microorganisms and their products in foods; national and international code of hygienic practice for food; food legislation; standards and codes of practices; activities of national food safety authority.<\/p>\n

MPH 673 Microbial Ecology (3 Cr.): <\/strong>History and development of microbial ecology; diversity, distribution, and abundance of microorganisms; symbiosis: mutualism, commensalism, and amensalism; culture-dependent and independent approaches for understanding microbial diversity in the environment; microbial diversity in congenial and adverse environments; role of microbes in global warming and green technology; biofilm; bioremediation; waste management.<\/p>\n

MPH 683 Vaccinology (3 Cr.): <\/strong>Modern concept of selecting vaccine antigens and adjuvants; Mechanism of immune-protection; overview of natural resistance to disease: from innate to adaptive immunity; mechanism of immune response following vaccination; modern vaccines; vaccine seed production; vaccine production: sterility, safety, potency and efficacy of vaccine; handling and storage of vaccines; immuno-potentiators; vaccinations and evaluation of vaccines; vaccine failure; quality control in vaccine production; vaccine registration: laws, legislation and ethics of vaccine production; contemporary issues in veterinary and human vaccines in Bangladesh.<\/p>\n

MPH 696 Reading and Conference (Credit to be arranged but not more than 3 Cr.): <\/strong>Special study assigned by the Major Professor on the recommendation of the Advisory Committee and\/or interest of the student.<\/p>\n

MPH 697 Special Problems<\/strong> (Credit to be arranged but not more than 3 Cr.<\/strong>):<\/strong> Investigation of special problems in microbiology and immunology not related to a thesis problem. The investigations may consist of original research and\/or literature survey.<\/p>\n

MPH 698 Seminar (1 Cr.):<\/strong> Discussion on an assigned topic in the field of Microbiology and Immunology.<\/p>\n

MPH 699 Thesis Research (Credit to be arranged but not less than 12 Cr.):<\/strong> Original Thesis Research.<\/p>\n

Note:<\/strong> Students having CGPA below 3.000 will not be allowed to enroll MPH 696, MPH 697, MPH 698 or MPH 699 until he\/she raised the CGPA to 3.000 or above.<\/p>\n
