The Department of Animal Breeding and Genetics (ABG) commenced its journey in 2011 as a constituent department of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science. Since its establishment, the department has been providing comprehensive theoretical and practical courses for both undergraduate and graduate students, with a strong emphasis on genetics, animal breeding, and reproductive biology. Through this integrated teaching approach, ABG strives to equip students with sound scientific knowledge as well as practical skills relevant to modern livestock and poultry improvement.
Faculty members of the department are actively engaged in research spanning classical and molecular genetics, quantitative and population genetics, animal breeding strategies, and reproductive physiology and technologies. These research activities aim to enhance productivity, fertility, adaptability, and genetic diversity of farm animals, thereby contributing to sustainable livestock development and food security. The department also places importance on the conservation and improvement of indigenous animal genetic resources, aligning its research with national priorities in animal agriculture and rural development.
The overarching objective of ABG is to produce competent, research‑oriented graduates in the fields of animal breeding and reproduction who are capable of contributing to academia, research organizations, government agencies, and the livestock industry. In pursuit of this goal, the department has already launched its MS in Animal Breeding and Genetics program from the Winter 2023 term, offering advanced coursework and thesis-based research opportunities. Building on this foundation, the department is committed to initiating a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in Animal Breeding and Genetics in the near future, further strengthening its role as a center of excellence in education and research in this specialized discipline.
