Prof. Dr. A. K. M. Aminul Islam was born, on 1 June, 1973 in Cumilla district of Bangladesh. He was the eldest son of Late Md. Sirajul Islam Master and Most. Jahanara Begum. Dr. Aminul Islam received both of his bachelor and Master’s degree from Bangladesh Agricultural University. After that he joined as Lecturer of Genetics and Plant Breeding at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Gazipur, Bangladesh and became Professor (Grade 1) in the same department of Gazipur Agricultural University (former BSMRAU). Professor Islam served BSMRAU as Director (Research) for three consecutive tenure (6 years: 2017-2023), Proctor, Head of Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Agricultural Engineering, Seed Science and Technology Unit, Assistant Provost and other important responsibilities. He was also served as Syndicate Member of the University and Director (Planning & Development) of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Gazipur, Bangladesh. Dr. Islam has obtained his Ph D degree in Chemical and Process Engineering from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. The dissertation title of Dr. Islam was “Improvement of Biodiesel Production through Genetic Studies of Jatropha (Jatropha curcas L.)”. Dr. Islam is the author of 170 articles published in nationally and internationally reputed journals, 25 book chapters and 5 books. He is a member of editorial board and referee of several national and international journals. Prof Islam served as the General Secretary of Plant Breeding and Genetics Society of Bangladesh (2 consecutive term), Seminar and research Secretary of JICA Alumni Association of Bangladesh (3 consecutive term) and member of several professional societies. Prof. Islam acted as Principal Breeder in the releasing system of 23 varieties of different crops, such as BU Hybrid Lau 1, BU Hybrid Lau 2, BU Hybrid Lau 3, BU Hybrid Lau 4, BU Lau 1, BU Lau 2, BU Cherry Tomato 2, BU Cherry Tomato 3, BU Cherry Tomato 4, BU Cherry Tomato 5, BU Mustard 1 (yield 2.4 t/ha), BU Capsicum 1, BU Lalshak 1, BU Baromashi Seem 1, BU Sheem 1 (salinity tolerant), BU Sheem 2, BU Sheem 3, BU Sheem 4 (high antioxidant), BU Sheem 5 (bearing from 2-node, profuse), BU Sheem 6, BU Dwarf Sheem 8 and BU Dwarf Sheem 9. Prof Islam is supervising the research of MS and Ph D students’ in areas Plant Breeding, Renewable Energy & Seed Technologies. Prof. Islam also the external examiner’s and supervisor of Ph D students of local and overseas Universities. He is conducting research on development of hybrid vegetables, hybrid Brassica napus using CMS system, rice breeding for quality grain and stress tolerance, heat tolerance in wheat, pulse (chickpea, lentil, pigeonpea) breeding, renewable energy research with Jatropha curcas.
