PLP 390: Diseases of Horticultural and Plantation Crops

PLP 290: Principles of Plant Pathology

Course summary: PLP 390: Diseases of Horticultural and Plantation Crops

Theory

Mango, guava, jackfruit, jujube, citrus, papaya, tomato, brinjal, chilli/pepper, okra, potato, cabbage, cauliflower, radish, knoll-khol, pea, beans, spinach, amaranth, onion, garlic, ginger, turmeric, coriander, rose, marigold, tuberose, tea, rubber etc. are important horticultural and plantation crops which are grown intensively in different parts of the country. Diseases have become serious constraints in the cultivation of
fruits, vegetables, spices, ornamental and plantation crops. The present course aims to give an overview of disease symptomatology, etiology, epidemiology, and management including host resistance, cultural biological and chemical methods.

Practical

In laboratory sessions, students will have the opportunity to identify major fungal, oomycetal, bacterial, viral, nemic and mycoplasmal diseases of horticultural and plantation crops and their causal organisms. At the end of the course students will be able to identify the disease in the field and prescribe appropriate measures to manage the disease.

Course summary: PLP 290: Principles of Plant Pathology

Theory

This course is intended for undergraduate students in their second year that are interested in learning about the importance of plant pathology, pathogenesis, infection process, diseases that affect plants, survival and mode of spread of plant pathogens, epidemiology of plant diseases, disease forecasting and assessment of crop diseases & yield losses, plant defenses, disease control strategies, modern approaches and their application in plant disease management.

Practical

In this course students will learn priniciples of plant disease management through lectures and demonstrations and exercises in laboratory. In laboratory sessions, students will have the opportunity for hands-on observation and learning about preparation of culture media, isolation of plant pathogens, and inoculation methods, Koch’s postulates, fungicides application, seed and soil treatment for plant disease control. After completion this course, students will be able to know disease development process and plant disease management strategies.

Specialization

Bio control of plant pathogens using beneficial microbes and their consortia, endophytic microorganism, molecular identification of microbes, chitosan.
