Dr. Islam’s academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and a Master of Science in Agronomy from Bangladesh Agricultural University. He later completed his Ph.D. in Agronomy at BSMRAU, where he explored the ecophysiology of flooding tolerance in mungbean. His pursuit of knowledge took him to the National Institute of Agro-Environmental Sciences in Japan, where he conducted postdoctoral research on Remote Sensing and GIS applications in agriculture. Throughout his career, Dr. Islam has remained committed to advancing agricultural knowledge, mentoring students, and addressing pressing global issues like food security and climate resilience.

As a seasoned educator, Dr. Islam has designed and taught courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. His expertise spans diverse topics, including, Principles of Crop Production, Irrigation and Farm Management, Agroclimatology, RS and GIS in Agrometeorology, and Climate Change & Crop Production. Over the years, he has mentored 47 MS and 7 Ph.D. students, guiding them toward groundbreaking research and innovations in sustainable agriculture.

Dr. Islam’s research portfolio is extensive, with over 80 Scopus indexed and peer-reviewed publications in prestigious journals such as Food Security, Environment, Development and Sustainability, and Agronomy for Sustainable Development, Euphytica. His work on abiotic stress (waterlogging, drought) tolerance in crops, and climate-resilient cropping systems, has earned 1800 citations globally. Notable projects include “Adaptation of Minor Cereals in the Brahmaputra Floodplains” and “Developing Improved Cropping Systems for Coastal Bangladesh.” He has secured over 2.4 million USD in research grants from esteemed organizations such as Asia-Pacific Network  (APN) for Global Change Research (Japan), the National Science Foundation (USA), FAO (Italy), and CIP-UPWARD (Philippines). Dr. Islam’s international collaborations further highlight his dedication to advancing global agricultural sustainability. His efforts have contributed significantly to addressing challenges like coastal erosion, monsoon dynamics and flash flood vulnerability and the impact of climate change on agriculture. Dr. Islam is also an active reviewer for leading journals, having reviewed over 24 manuscripts in recent years.

Recognized as a leading scientist, Dr. Islam has been listed in the AD World Scientist Rankings 2024, holding the 3,146th global position in agriculture.
