RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
I had worked for six years in the field of research to develop different horticultural crops. First three years, I devoted myself to develop root crops especially sweet potato and taro. The objectives were to breed high yielding and carotene rich sweet potato cultivars. Those ultimately help to self-sufficiency in food and also to help to improve the malnutrition of the country. Secondly, I put my effort to develop some techniques for seed production in Brassica particularly in cabbage which is not produce seed in the tropical conditions due to lack of low temperature. Finally, I succeeded to breed two synthesize Brassica lines which will produce seed as well as head in the tropical conditions.
Another important area of my research was improvement and production technology development of ornamental horticultural crops, particularly breeding orchids, in vitro cormel production for gladiolus and caladium; micropropagation technique development for Saint paulia, Orchids, Lilies , Tuberose and Rose. Conducted research also on shelf-life and post harvest preservation of various cut flowers for export.
EXTENSION AND TRAINING EXPERIENCE
At Central Extension Resources Development Institute, worked for identifying the farmers problems in the field of horticulture and solve these problems in the institute and disseminate those massages to the Extension Officers through training and through community development work.
At IPSA I have developed two training modules one for Instructors of AETI and one for SMS of Horticulture and provide week long training to AETI Instructors and SMS (Horticulture) in the year 1996 and 1997 through outreach program of IPSA. Besides, In 1997, I had given a week long higher training to senior Horticulturists of DAE as ‘Advanced Training on Horticultural Crops’. Recently, at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, I trained the Block Supervisors of Gazipur district on a new technique of Jack fruit grafting entitled ‘Seed grafting in Jack fruit – A new technique’ during July 1999. In all programs on Horticulture, I served as a Training Coordinator.
FIELD EXPERIENCE
I had surveyed most of the vegetable mass production areas in Bangladesh and farmers fields. Besides, I had an opportunity to conduct some trials in the farmers’ plot in the char land of Jamalpur district. Most of my results, I had reported in Bangladesh Horticulture, Krishi Katha (a magazine for the farmer) daily newspapers. Took part in various surveys on vegetable and fruit production in Bangladesh.
TEACHING EXPERIENCE
I offered courses on:
1) Principles of Vegetable Production,
2) Vegetable Seed Technology,
3) Plant Tissue Culture.
During my service carrier, I supervised Ph.D.s and Master’s degree thesis works for Ph.D. and M.S. degree from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University under course credit system.
Moreover, took part international and national seminar and symposiums. I am a life member of the Bangladesh Society for Horticultural Science and member of American Society for Horticultural Science.
