GAU Observes Martyred Intellectuals Day with Solemnity

Gazipur Agricultural University (GAU) observed Martyred Intellectuals Day 2025 with profound respect, solemnity, and heartfelt remembrance, honoring the nation’s finest sons who were brutally martyred on 14 December 1971 during the final phase of the Great War of Liberation. The day-long observance began with the national flag being flown at half-mast across the university campus. A black flag was also hoisted at the 36th July Chattar as a symbolic expression of national grief and sorrow. At 9:30 a.m., faculty members, officers, staff and students wore black badges and paid collective tribute to the martyred intellectuals. Under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. GKM Mustafizur Rahman, a silent mourning rally was held with the participation of deans, directors, teachers, students, officers and employees. The rally peacefully marched around the campus and concluded at the Central Shaheed Minar, where the Vice-Chancellor paid floral tributes on behalf of the university. Subsequently, the Teachers’ Association and other faculty members also placed wreaths in remembrance. Following the tribute ceremony, a brief meaningful discussion session was held at the Shaheed Minar, moderated by Professor Dr. Mohammad Sharif Raihan, Director (Student Welfare). The session was addressed by the Vice-Chancellor, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. M. Moynul Haque, Treasurer Professor Dr. Md. Safiul Islam Afrad, President of the Teachers’ Association Professor Dr. Md. Abu Ashraf Khan, General Secretary Professor Dr. Md. Moshiul Islam, Registrar Md. Abdullah Mridha and Assistant Registrar (Law and State) Abu Hanif Palowan. The speakers emphasized that the sacrifice of the martyred intellectuals remains an unparalleled chapter in national history and continues to inspire future generations with the values of patriotism, humanity and moral courage. They urged everyone to remain vigilant so that the spirit of this sacrifice is never undermined. In his address, the Vice-Chancellor noted that, “the systematic killing of intellectuals was aimed at crippling the nation intellectually and stressed the need for unity beyond political differences to safeguard the country and uphold the ideals of independence. Even Because of local collaborators and traitors, the great proclaimer of independence, martyred President Ziaur Rahman, had to sacrifice his life for the country.” As part of the observance, a special prayer was offered after Zuhr at the university’s central mosque, seeking forgiveness and eternal peace for the souls of the martyred intellectuals.
